We had been talking about going to France for a few months but had procrastinated on some of the details. For those of you who tend to do the same I’d suggest at least getting some of the important things out of the way like accommodations. I had booked all accommodations with the exception of Bordeaux since we weren’t sure we were actually staying in the city. As it turned out I had several Trip Advisor “buddies” suggest that we stay in Bordeaux and explore the old city as well as enjoy some of their excellent food and wine. After hearing that I said, why not? I figured that October would be relatively quiet and not difficult regarding available rooms. Well today I starting to get concerned and of course Sara piped in “Dad, you guys can always stay in a hostel”. Uh, right. Well after several hours searching on line and getting more rejections than a vacuum cleaner salesman I finally found what appears to be a nice B&B. Again, thanks to the Trip Advisor reviewers for the honesty with their posts.
This is our third trip to Europe and the second one that we’ve planned without the assistance of a professional. It’s a lot of work and I’m sure there are things that we’ve missed but we’ve found we like to “wing it” a bit on our trips. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose but each time you get a little bit smarter about things. We still use as much help from Trip Advisor, Rick Steves and Frommers as we can get along with any other available information but in the end it’s kind of fun not exactly knowing what to expect.
I’ve got a few more details to work out on the itinerary and as soon as I have those nailed down I’ll post it on this blog.
